Gas Masks?
 

There's an overwhelming number of gas masks out there.
For example: http://www.approvedgasmasks.com/mask-gas.htm , with no real feedback
on most of them?

Any recommendations for SHTF prep?

First, exactly what kind of gas do you anticipate? Every gas mask is a special purpose device. That's why there are so many kinds. Some come with a dozen or so interchangeable canisters for different threats.

I would think about the only gas we would need to prepare for would be tear gas. That's probably what the police would use to get us out of our houses.

Preparing for An NCB type scenario would prove very expensive baecause not only would you need the appropriate cartridge for the mask but also everything that would be needed with it for decontamination, or longer term support. It's really not feasible.

I would go with a mil Spec NBC Mask the newer models with the 40mm screw on filters are the best we sell them at our store for 75.00 and the filters for 10 each I'm sure pricing in the lower 48 cant be to much more. All our staff have the M40 for themselves and there family. When buying filters for these they have two types one comes in a plastic can the other in a tin can with a key to open it we like the tin can ones because of the longer term storage that packaging will give you. As for an NBC environment rubber gloves and a mask with hood will get you 90% of the way there for decon and changing filters have a bunch of alcohol wipes on hand

What you need is going to vary depending on the intended threat. A P100 will protect you from a bacterial threat, but do nothing for benzene fumes. A filter that will absorb organic vapors will not protect you from chlorine gas or nerve agents. If your anticipated needs are in the NBC category, you'll need protection for every other part of your body. A Tyvek bunny suit won't be enough--you're looking at something like this

Global pandemic like bird flu? I heard gas masks are very very good for that sort of threat. Wonder how long you could keep it on so it would be effective. You have to eat something sometime...?
